Baptist Convention Of South Sudan

The Journey of the Baptist Convention of South Sudan

The Baptist Convention of South Sudan (BCOSS) was formed to serve as a unifying body for Baptist churches across South Sudan, promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ and nurturing Christian fellowship among believers.

Though the Convention’s roots stretch back through decades of Baptist mission influence in the region, BCOSS formally organized itself to coordinate church ministry, strengthen leadership development, and foster unity among congregations during the early years of nationwide Christian mobilization.

Amid seasons of conflict, displacement, and reconstruction in South Sudan, the Baptist community continued to grow, gathering believers, raising pastors, planting churches, and carrying out mission work in challenging circumstances. Over the years, BCOSS has remained a beacon of hope—championing evangelism, discipleship, peacebuilding, education, and community transformation.

The Early Foundation

The early Baptist witness in the region was shaped by passionate missionaries, local evangelists, and churches that embraced the calling to spread the Gospel.

Through house fellowships, village outreach, and small congregations, Baptist believers laid the foundation for what would eventually become a national Convention.

Despite limited resources, early Baptist churches in South Sudan persevered—training leaders, discipling young believers, and maintaining unity through turbulent times.

Becoming a National Convention

As the Baptist movement expanded, there was a growing need for coordinated leadership, doctrinal unity, and structured ministry support.

This resulted in the formal establishment of the Baptist Convention of South Sudan, bringing churches under one national body committed to:

  • strengthening faith,

  • training pastors,

  • supporting ministries,

  • and promoting Gospel-centered community development.

With dedicated pastors, lay leaders, and ministry teams, BCOSS emerged as a key Christian institution in South Sudan—building strong networks of churches and ministries across the country.

Over the years, BCOSS has significantly expanded its reach through:
